Sometimes a boy just needs his dad.

Here is a sweet little story of Richie and Richard understanding the power of father/son bonding.

It is a strange day indeed when even REGGIE’s dad wants to hang out with him!

Do you think the polo dad meant, “that Rich boy (as in his last name) is fantastic!” or “that nattily-dressed and snobby looking child is fantastic?” It is very logical that an 8? 9? 10? year old boy would be better than the Argentine national team.

Here is a cute one-pager that once again shows how Richie actually prefers the simple things in life.

And now, a second story that is basically the same schtick as the first. It remains shocking in that again, Reggie’s dad is hanging out with him! Perhaps Richie’s birthday falls on “International hang out with your son that you can’t stand day”. Although that would not apply to Freckles and Peewee. Regardless, enjoy round two!

And where is Mrs. Rich in all this? She never travels alone anywhere, she just wanders around the house, plays with her jewelry and has charity meetings. But, I suppose if you were a boy, would you want to hang out with her on your birthday and talk about jewelry? Probably not.

I quite like Mr. Rich’s snazzy Parisian clothes in this story and funky little white gogo boots. Richie wears little white boots every day, but his do not have the panache of Mr. Rich’s.

What did you think? Does it make your want to call your son/Dad? Or purchase some snazzy shoes? πŸ™‚

  1. This story is a bit of a departure from the usual Richie Rich fare. (Not that there’s anything wrong with the usual stories!) I always like a story that delves into a main character’s deep-seated needs, and this one focuses on an oft-ignored aspect of Richie’s relationship with his father…namely, that maintaining all that wealth does require Mr. Rich to be away from his family from time to time (this story implies that his absences are quite frequent). In that respect, Richie Rich isn’t so rich after all…the other boys Richie encounter are “richer” than he is, because they have fathers who are active in their lives. The story has a great ending…but what do you bet that the moment Mr. Rich gets back to his office, he’s off to distant parts again?

I think the father watching the polo match is referring to Richie by his last name, because isn’t it more or less a given that a kid playing in a polo match
like that is likely to be fairly well off? So “that rich kid” could apply to any kid playing in the match, n’est-ce pas? Besides, wouldn’t Richie Rich be well known in his world?

I may have read this story before, years ago…it seems kind of familiar. But in any case, it is an excellent story and definitely worthy of notice. Thanks for sharing it.

Two questions: Will we be seeing anything of Jackie Jokers on this blog? Also–I’ve been trying for years to track down the story that introduced Reggie’s baby sister Penny Van Dough. Do you know what issue of what book the story appeared in? Thanks! I really enjoy this blog.

  2. Yea! Thank you for your awesome comment! I get so excited when I get a comment notification! Otherwise, I feel like I am just talking to myself. πŸ™‚ I do like how in the later years of Richie, Richard and Regina seem to spend a lot more time with Richie, although Regina generally acts like a ninny, but quality time is quality time. I can definitely add some Jackie Jokers stories, I will start looking for a good one. I do have the below one posted, but it’s not quite the typical Jackie story.

If the link doesn’t work, you can search the story on the top of this page.

And, in other news, I was going to tell you that the Penny story is one you can download a free preview of in Richie Rich Classics 2 on the Richie Rich app from the apple app store, but I just went and apparently the store in the app doesn’t work anymore. So…I was worried to post a story that is still available for purchase, but since it may not be, I can probably post. I will do some checking around and hopefully can post it soon. It is from Richie Rich Success Stories #27.

Thanks so much for checking out the blog, I love hearing people’s thoughts on stories so comment as much as you please!

Funny, it seems like one of the perks of being the richest man in the world would be the ability to spend ample time with one’s family!

Richard may not be perfect but he is still a good father nonetheless. He and Richie truly love each other.
